PIQUA BEATS SOUTH, GETS SECOND STRAIGHT WIN...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
PIQUA - Things are starting to come together for the Piqua baseball team.

The Indians continued to hit the ball, got another excellent outing from their strting pitcher and the result was a second straight win in a GWOC crossover game at Hardman Field.

The Indians defeated Springfield South 8-5 Wednesday in a game where Piqua took an 8-1 lead to the seventh inning.

“We are hitting the ball well,” Piqua coach Chris Barr said. “The bottom of the order had hits and scored runs. Anytime you are getting production all the way through the order, you have to be happy.”

And Taylor Gertner turned in a dominating performance for six innings, finishing with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Gertner was virtually unhittable in the first six innings. After South scored a run in the top of the first, Piqua scored four in the third inning, with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth giving the Indians an 8-1 lead.

“Taylor (Gertner) pitched a great game, especially the first six innings,” Barr said. “I wanted him to get a complete game, but he just ran out of gas in the seventh inning.”

South was able to score four runs, before Gaaj Meyer came in to close out the win. Meyer faced three batters, striking out two and combined with Gertner on a seven hitter.

“Gaaj Meyer came in and did a great job,” Barr said. “You can’t ask anymore than that.”

Gertner helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Willie Monbeck was also 2-for-3, with a double and two RBI.

Cole Selsor was 2-for-3, while Shea Selsor had a double and two RBI.

Piqua will return to action today, traveling to Beavercreek.
