PIQUA BEATS SOUTH FOR SECOND TIME...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
PIQUA - Bobby Shaffer gave the Piqua baseball team a chance to play Monday.

The Indians took care of the rest, defeating Springfield South 6-1 in a Division I sectional tournament game.

Piqua will play at top seed Vandalia-Butler at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"We need to give a plug to Bobby Shaffer for getting the diamond ready," Piqua coach Chris Barr said. "When I was here Sunday night, I didn't think there was any way we would be able to play. He worked on the diamond all day today to get it ready."

Taylor Gertner pitched a six-hitter, striking out eight and walking one. That included striking out the side in the seventh.

It was the second straight strong outing from Gertner, who threw 93 pitches.

Shortstop Willie Monbeck had an outstanding game on defense and the Indians recorded two double plays.

Piqua, led by the hot bat of Cole Selsor, did all the damage they needed to do in the first two innings, scoring three runs in each frame.

Selsor, coming off a 3-for-4 game against Troy, was 2-f-for-3 and started the game with a double.

Piqua is trying to schedule a game for today, so that Shea Selsor would be eligible for the Vandalia game after serving the first of his two-game suspension Monday. But, as of Monday evening, they had not been able to find a game.
