PIQUA DROPS OPENER TO VERSAILLES...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
VERSAILLES — It was not the opening game Piqua baseball coach Chris Barr envisioned.

But, a talented Versailles team would have been a tough opener for anyone.

The Indians struggled in a 13-2 loss to the Tigers in five innings.

“It was definitely disappointing,” Barr said. “Versailles is a very good team. Hopefully, this will be a wakeup call for us. We had not been practicing very well for the last week.

“I know that is because we were indoors and nobody likes to be indoors. But, Versailles was in the same situation and came out played a great game. It just seemed like we didn’t show up ready to play. But, there were still a lot of good things out there as well.”

Willie Monbeck was 2-for-3 for Piqua with a triple and one RBI. Taylor Gertner was 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Gertner pitched the first four innings, striking out six and walking two. Kiel Feeser pitched the final inning, striking out one and walking one.

Jon Richard went the distance on the mound for Versailles, striking out six and walking three.

Patrick Mescher slugged a home run and drove in four runs. Nick Eilerman was 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI, while Tyler Bey was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Piqua will play at West Carrollton today.
