STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
It may not have been a thing of artistic beauty.
But after nine new members were inducted into the Piqua Athletic Hall of Fame, the Indians turned in a gutty performance and held off a scrappy Sidney team 62-50 in GWOC North action.
For most of the this week, Piqua has had just six varsity players in practice.
“I am really proud of the kids,” Piqua coach Marcus Bixler said. “It has been a tough week. Hopefully, we can come back Tuesday against Bellbrook at full strength.”
While the Indians had an abnormal shooting performance in the first half, making just 31 percent from the floor, Piqua finished the half on a 12-1 run to take a 26-20 lead and the Indians never trailed again.
Wes Reed paced a balanced Indian attack with 16 points, while David Rolf scored 15 points.
Justin Hemm not only got untracked offensively with 13 points, but held Brad Yinger to four points and grabbed seven rebounds. Yinger was coming off a 31-point game.
Dan Wilson scored 11 points and in the fourth quarter found Reed and Hemm for layups on consecutive possessions to help the Indians put the game away.
Ryan Musselman, battling through a hip injury, ran a Piqua offense that had just 12 turnovers and had a steal in the final 10 seconds off the first half to give the Indians a six-point lead at the break.
Tyrell Knox, Cedric Wright and Cortland Martin all saw considerable playing time as well.
Piqua was 25 of 62 from the floor for 40 percent and 10 of 16 from the line for 63 percent.
Piqua also won the battle of the boards 34-30 and Sidney had 19 turnovers.
The Indians will host Bellbrook on Tuesday.
