LADY INDIANS SNAP THE STREAK...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
Maybe all the Piqua girls basketball team needed was a home game in the Friday night spotlight.

After taking a 4-3 lead against Tecumseh early in the first quarter, the Lady Indians never trailed again in a 49-36 victory that snapped a 42-game losing streak.

The Indians last victory came in a double-overtime win over Sidney Nov. 26, 2005.

“That is one happy locker room,” Piqua coach Brad Allen said with a big grin after a short postgame conversation with his players. “I couldn’t be happier for the girls. The kids did a great job.”

Senior Kristen Magoteaux was well aware of the significance of Friday’sgame. The four-year starter came out on the winning end for just the fifth time in her 66-game career.

“Believe me, when we get a win around here, it is a big deal,” Magoteaux said. “This feels great. It feels really good. We talked about getting a win early in the year and now, hopefully, we can get some more.”

Maybe the biggest key for the Lady Indians is the aggressive play of Magoteaux taking the ball to the basket and scoring, or drawing a foul. She finished with a team-high 14 points.

“Coaches have been telling me, “step up, step up, step up’,” Magoteaux said. “So, that is what I have been trying to do.”

Miranda Baker had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Kayle Quinter had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Beth Caldwell hit four straight free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

And, while Piqua had 32 turnovers, they also forced 32.

Piqua was 15 of 44 from the floor for 34 percent and 18 of 27 from the line for 67 percent.

The Arrows won the battle of the boards 36-29.

Piqua will travel to Springfield North Tuesday.

“That streak is over,” Allen said. “Now, we will start another streak.”

One of the winning variety.
