LADY INDIANS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
The Piqua girls soccer team took on Northwestern Thursday night and came away with a 2-0 victory.
Alex Jess scored both goals and Lucy Brown picked up two saves in goal.
The JV team managed a 0-0 tie in their opening effort.
Tuesday night the Lady Indians hosted the Lady Arrows of Tecumseh.
Piqua gave up an early goal in the opening minute of the game and then settled down to play a solid match.
Senior Alex Jess evened the score a short time later when she went one-on-one with the Arrows goalie and slipped a shot into the net.
After giving the Arrows a second goal, the Indians rallied back with a second goal of their own on a nice combination of passes between sophomore Ashley Hamilton and Jess, with Hamilton finishing nicely.
From there the Lady Indians turned it on and started the process of burying the Lady Arrows. Senior Amber Arnold found Hamilton with a pass and Ashley buried the ball in the net with a nice left footed effort for her second goal of the match putting Piqua up 3-2.
Arnold then got her second assist of the night when she found Jess with a pass and the Indians were up 4-2.
The Indians were not done yet though as Hamilton got her third goal of the night on yet another opposite foot shot to finish the scoring for the night at 5-2.

LADY INDIANS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
The Piqua Lady Indians Soccer took on the Lady Roughriders from St. Marys Memorial Thursday night at Wertz Stadium.
The match was evenly contested but St. Marys escaped with a 1-0 win, scoring on a penalty kick in the late minutes of the first half. In JV action the Lady Indians tied 0-0 in a tough fought battle.
In the varsity match, the Lady Indians defense anchored by seniors Kristen Magoteaux, and Betsy Stine, along with junior Bethany Alexander and sophomores Abbie Obringer and Brittany Diehl played tough against a hard charging, physical attack put on by the Lady Roughriders.
The only score of the game came on a controversial handling call inside Piqua’s eighteen, which resulted in a penalty kick for St. Marys.
Goalkeeper Lucy Brown had another solid night in goal and was busy collecting about a dozen saves on the night.
On the offensive end the Lady Indians showed moments of promise and had several opportunities including one with an open goal in the first half when the St. Marys keeper got caught in traffic and left the goal wide open, but the Indians missed the opportunity with a shot just over the cross bar.
“It was another hot, humid night and we have been doing two-a-days for the past two weeks in this heat and tonight we just looked tired mentally, physically and emotionally,” Alexander said. “I am not concerned about the result because even as tired as we were, we hung tough.
“Take away the PK and it was a 0-0 tie. St. Marys has a very good program and we have made them our last scrimmage game for each of the past two seasons because they throw a very aggressive attack at you for the entire match.
“We had a fairly hard practice the morning of the match and they were fresh and had a much deeper bench.
“We will watch the films and then take the weekend off to rest and recover then we will get into a busy early season schedule.
“All in all, we are satisfied with where we are at this point and look forward to the challenges ahead of us.”
The Lady Indians will begin regular season play with five games on the road, beginning on Wednesday, at Kettering Fairmont in a GWOC crossover game.
