PIQUA SHUTS OUT GREENVILLE...
COVERAGE PROVIDED BY THE PIQUA DAILY CALL
Piqua girls soccer coach Rob Alexander has been stressing teamwork to his squad in the last couple weeks.
And the Lady Indians put that on display in wet, soggy conditions Monday, recording a 3-0 victory over Greenville at Wertz Stadium.
“We have been doing a lot of work in practice with 5v5 with smaller quads,” Alexander said. “We have been working a lot on our passing and controlling the ball.”
The Lady Indians, playing in a downpour for much of the game, dominated from the outset, as Greenville had just four shots on goal, with keeper Lucy Brown easily recording a shutout.
Piqua got on the board with 3:55 remaining in the first half, when Maggie Warner got in position in front of the Greenville goal and Betsy Stine hit her with a perfect pass.
Some beautiful teamwork from Jess and Sarah Bell gave Piqua a 2-0 lead with 26:41 remaining. Jess made a run, them passed the ball to Bell, who crossed it back to Jess for the goal.
Jess then finished the scoring, taking a ball from Maddie Campbell along the left sideline and drilling a shot that was too hot for the Greenville keeper to handle, finishing in the back of the net.
The Indians had a number other shots where they just missed scoring.
Piqua won the JV game 2-0, with Danielle Barnhart and Hillary Fry scoring goals.
Piqua, 4-6-2, will travel to Sidney Wednesday for its final road game, before playing the final three regular season games at home.
And you can expect the Lady Indians to have plenty of teamwork on display.
