PIQUA PUTS A SCARE INTO BUTLER...
COVERAGE PROVIDED BY THE PIQUA DAILY CALL
Sometimes a loss isn’t a loss.
Which was exactly the case for the Piqua girls soccer team Wednesday night.
Vandalia-Butler came to Wertz Stadium looking for a win to earn the GWOC North title … and the Lady Aviators had no idea the challenge that was in front of them.
Piqua, playing without one of their key players in Maggie Warner, put a scare into the Aviators that Butler is probably still trying to recover from.
But, the Lady Aviators were able to escape with a 2-1 victory.
“If we could have stopped the game with about 13 minutes to go, I would have had a thrilling story to tell,” Piqua coach Rob Alexander said. “But, they were able to get two late goals and win.”
The story is still pretty good from a Piqua perspective.
“We played our best game of the year,” Alexander said. “They came in here looking for a conference title and we played right with them. And that was without Maggie (Warner). I can’t say enough about our kids and the way they played tonight.”
Piqua is now 4-8-3 overall and finished 1-4-0 in the GWOC North. Laura Deal had a strong game in goal with 14 saves for the Lady Indians, who host Miami East Saturday. The JV game starts at 1 p.m., with the varsity at 3 p.m.
