PIQUA PREPS FOR TOURNAMENT WITH TIE WITH MIAMI EAST...
COVERAGE PROVIDED BY THE PIQUA DAILY CALL
Following a moment of silence and tribute to Sam Pearson, the former Piqua athlete who lost his life in Iraq Wednesday, Piqua tied Miami East 1-1 as both teams get ready to begin sectional tournament play.
“I have no complaints about today,” Carson said. “This was a very physical game. We did a nice job keeping our composure out there. The last couple games haven’t been very physical, so this was good preparation for us heading into the tournament.”
Piqua, 4-8-4, has the unenviable task of traveling to Northmont Monday for a 7 p.m. game.
“I kind of like our position,” Alexander said about playing Northmont. “I would much rather be the underdog and the girls are fired up for the game.”
Miami East scored first on a "moon ball from Amanda Ball that caught Piqua off guard.
Ball launched the shot high in the air from just past midfield and it landed between the Piqua defense and keeper Lucy Brown. It then took a high bounce over Brown’s head into the net.
But, it was Piqua who was on the offensive for most of the second half, but East keeper Brittany Lehman was up to the challenge, adding to her school record with 13 saves.
Piqua got the equalizer with 24:34 remaining in the game. Laura Deal crossed the ball towards the net. Lehman defelected the shot, but couldn’t hold it and Alex Jess followed it into the goal.
“That is something we work on all the time in practice,” Alexander said. “The cross to the post. It is a pretty play when you see it.”
Alexander was disappointed the Indians didn’t put more balls in the net.
“All we had to do was keep the ball in frame, instead of kicking it high,” Alexander said. “That has been our problem all year. We weren’t able to finish.”
