WILHELM'S HOMER SPARKS PIQUA TO WIN...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
Jessica Wilhelm continued to have a "blast" with Sidney pitching.
And the Lady Indians are reaping the benefits of a tough early season schedule.
Wilhelm's two-run homer led the offense in a 3-0 victory over Sidney as the Lady Indians showed they intend to contend within the GWOC North this spring.
It was Piqua's fourth win in the last five games and came against a Sidney team that came into the game 12-1.
Piqua did all of the damage in the third inning.
Betsy Stine started the inning with a single.
Kari Black drove her in with a single and was on base when Wilhelm, a sophomore, stepped to the plate.
The outfielder, who had hit her first high school home run against Sidney last spring, launched a tocket that disappeared over the left field fence.
That was more than enough for Piqua pitcher Tina Byrd. The senior hurled a two-hitter, striking out 14, while walking just one.
The win improved Piqua to 2-1 in the GWOC North, where there are few nights off.
The Lady Indians will travel to Brookville Tuesday and Vandalia-Butler Wednesday, in another big GWOC North matchup.
