PIQUA WINS 28-1 AGAINST A SOUTH TEAM WITH NO QUIT...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
What happened after Piqua’s 28-1 win over Springfield South in five innings Wednesday was just as important as what took place between the lines during the game.

The Lady Wildcats, under Greg Newland, were one of the most feared and respected programs around. But, a team in the rebuilding process was no match for a talented Lady Indians team.

But, that didn’t prevent them from playng hard the entire game. The Piqua team made a trip to South dugout after the game to congratulate the Lady Wildcats on that effort.

“You admire kids that work hard and never quit,” Piqua coach Rick Claprood said. “We can learn some lessons from that team (Springfield South). I think it was important to congratulate them. You want to win with dignity and show sportsmanship.”

Kat Nicodemus was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, Stine was 4-for-4 and scored four runs, Black was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI and Wilhelm was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

Miranda Baker was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Elaine Schmidt scored two runs, Lacey Petry had a hit and drove in a run, Nikki Payne had two doubles in the fourth inning and drove in four runs and Morgan Hughes drew three walks and drove in a run.

The damage was not limited to the starters. Whitney Warner drilled a three-run triple in fourth, while Adrienne Tisher faced just three batters in the fifth.

She combined with Tina Byrd on a one-hitter. Byrd struck out five and Tisher added one strikeout, with Piqua picking Crystal Wells off to end the game. Wells had reached on an infield single.

The Lady Indians will face a much bigger challenge between the lines today, traveling to Beavercreek.
