PIQUA SENIORS HAVE BIG NIGHT AGAINST TROY...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
The man upstairs knows what he is doing.
The Piqua softball team was supposed to have Senior Day Saturday against Columbus Westland, before it was rained out.
Instead, the Lady Indians Fab Five of Kari Black, Tina Byrd, Kat Nicodemus, Lacey Petry and Betsy Stine got about the most memorable Senior Day imaginable.
The Lady Indians blanked Troy 6-0 Tuesday to close out a 15-9 regular season and 7-3 GWOC North record. Piqua will open tournament play today, hosting Chaminade-Julienne at 5 p.m.
And the emotions were flowing in the dugout afterwards from the five seniors.
"I really think this is going to give us even more momentum heading into the tournament," Byrd said after pitching a two-hitter, while striking out 16 and walking just one. "Since, we were freshman, this has always been a special game."
And the Lady Indians have always played like it.
Kari Black was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Betsy Stine was 1-for-3 with a double and Lacey Petry scored a run and was solid on defense.
Tina Byrd struck out 16 batters and Kat Nicodemus homered.
