PIQUA ROLLS OVER WAYNE 11-0...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
When the Piqua softball team is on its game, there is little they can't do.

Monday was one of those games as the Lady Indians rolled to an 11-0 victory over Wayne.

"Wayne is a little down in numbers this year," Piqua coach Rick Claprood said. "But, they will be back. But, our girls are doing such a great job right now. All the games we lost have been close games."

Piqua's 4-5 record has as much to do with their rugged schedule as anything. And Monday was a great example why Claprood expects that mark to only improve as the season goes on.

And Claprood points to seniors Kari Black, Tina Byrd, Kat Nicodemus, Lacey Petry and Betsy Stine as one of the big keys.

"All five of those girls are doing a super job," Claprood said. "They are doing such a great job leading this team. I can't say enough about that."

Despite having two runners thrown out at the plate in the first inning, Piqua was able to plate four runs on five hits.

Nicodemus, Stine, Black and Jessica Wilhelm started the game with four straight hits and Black's scored a run. Wayne was looking to escape the inning trailing just 1-0, but Elaine Schmidt had an infield single to score a run and two more scored when Petry's fly ball was dropped.

That was more than enough for Byrd, who pitched the first four innings and combined with Adrienne Tisher on a one-hitter.

Stine was 3-for-3, while Black was 2-for-2 and Schmidt was 2-for-3.

Piqua had 10 of 11 batters, including pinch-hitter Sarah Turner, reach base at least once during the game.

The Lady Indians host Trotwood-Madison today, looking to even their record and stay on their game.
