PIQUA ADVANCES WITH WIN OVER GREEN WAVE...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
VANDALIA — Piqua volleyball coach Chris Davis was just happy to see his entire team together Thursday night at the Vandalia SAC against Greenville.

“We hadn’t had everybody together since last Thursday,” Davis said. “We have had some injuries and kids under the weather.”

So, when fourth seeded Piqua lost the opening game to the third seeded Lady Wave, there was no real reason for concern.

Piqua advanced with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 win over Greenville. The Lady Indians will play second seeded Troy in a sectional final at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It was the first time we had all played together in almost a week,” senior middle hitter Sara Keck said. “It just took us a little while to get going.”

Once they did, Greenville really had no answers.

Keck led the way with her powerful hitting and blocking, along with solid defense.

And she had plenty of help.

Cassie Curtis and Ashley Belisle, who was sick, had some big kills. Joni Barnett, who couldn’t serve because of a jammed thumb, still was a factor in the front row as was Kayle Quinter.

Miranda Baker did a nice job serving for Barnett and along with Macareena Studebaker provided the Lady Indians with solid defense.

Chelsea Hostetter mixed the offense to perfection and finished the match off with a kill.

Piqua had to rally to pull even at 21 in the fourth game. After a kill by Curtis, Baker served the final three points. The final two points came on kills by  Keck and Hostetter.

Hostetter had 34 assists and three digs for Piqua, 14-6.

Keck had 10 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and two aces; while Belisle had eight kills, 17 digs, one block and one ace.

Curtis had nine kills, 17 digs and one block; while Barnett had two blocks, two kills and one assist. Quinter had five kills and two blocks.

Studebaker had 18 digs and one ace; while Baker had 11 digs and one ace.

Like Greenville Thursday, Piqua will be looking for its second win over a higher seeded team in two weeks Saturday.

Which is just fine with the Lady Indians.
