PIQUA TAKES ON LEHMAN IN RIVALRY BATTLE...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
It was not just another volleyball match in Garbry Gymnasium Thursday night. That was reflected by the intensity at which the match was played … and by the spirit and fan support from both teams crowds.
And while Piqua played well at times, Lehman was able to come away with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 victory.
The evened the Lady Cavaliers record at 4-4, while Piqua dropped to 2-4.
“This is a match the players on both teams look forward to,” Lehman coach Greg Snipes said. “It is always a great match with a big crowd. We got off to slow starts in every game, but we were able to pull through.”
And, while Piqua coach Chris Davis was disappointed in the final outcome, he was pleased with some of the things he saw from the Lady Indians.
“I didn’t expect this (to be 2-4),” Davis said. “But, I still saw some things we improved on tonight. The kids came out with a lot of intensity. They always do for Lehman. What we need to do is bring that same kind of intensity to the floor in all of our matches and play with that intensity for all 25 points, not just 10 or 15.. That definitely could have made a difference in a match like Beavercreek.”
For Piqua, Hostetter had 17 assists, three kills and two digs. Sara Keck had five kills, four digs and six blocks, while Belisle had eight kills, three digs and two blocks. Cassi Curtis had three kills and four digs, while Kayle Quinter had two kills.
“You look at our leading hitters,” Davis said. “They are all in single digits in kills. It is tough to win a match that way."
The Lehman JVs defeated Piqua 9-15, 25-23, 25-22.
Abby Mauer had 11 kills and four aces, while Anna Watercutter had 23 assists and four digs. Gayle Ulrich had eight kills and five digs, while Alison Ulbrich had three kills and three solo blocks.
The Lehman and Piqua JV teams will play in the Piqua Invitational Saturday.
The Piqua varsity will host Miamisburg Tuesday.
