LADY INDIANS DOWN XENIA...

STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
It was not a perfect a night of volleyball by any means.

But, the Piqua volleyball team showed flashes of what they can be at the start and finish of a 25-8, 21-25, 25-15, 25-8 win over Xenia Thursday at Garbry Gymnasium to improve to 2-2.

“We are not where we want to be yet,” Piqua coach Chris Davis said. “Not to take anything away from Xenia, but knowing what we have, I feel like this should have been a three game match. It definitely should have been three games.”

The good news for the Lady Indians was that in the first and fourth games, Piqua’s dominance was clear.

With Cassi Curtis serving 12 straight points in the opening game, Piqua took a 19-2 lead.

Ashley Kraft had two kills in the run, Sara Keck had one and Cheslea Hostetter and Joni Barnett also had kills.

Curtis also helped herself with an ace and Xenia never recovered.

But, the second game was a struggle from a start and Piqua led just 15-13 in the third game before a 10-2 run to finish the game that carried into the fourth game. Ashley Belisle finished the third game with a block and kill and continued to make her presence felt in the fourth game.

Keck pounded 17 kills  and added a block, while Belisle had 10 kills, two blocks, six digs and five aces.

Curtis had nine kills, five aces and five digs, while Barnett had four aces and four digs. Hostetter dished out 45 assists.

The Piqua junior varsity and freshman teams both won.

The JV won 20-25, 25-11, 25-20, while the freshman won 25-7, 25-12.

Piqua will play at Beavercreek Tuesday in a GWOC crossover game.

And look to continue the work in progress.
