TWO INDIANS TAKE FIRST AT EDGEWOOD...
STORY BY ROB KISER - PIQUA DAILY CALL
EDGEWOOD The Piqua wrestling team had hopes of winning the Edgewood Invitational Saturday.
And the Indians nearly pulled it off, finishing second to Troy and placing all 11 wrestlers in the top six.
“We had hoped to win the title,” Piqua coach Scott Kaye said. “But, there were some strong teams there that had 14 wrestlers to our 11. If we had one more guy do what the other guys did, that would have easily put us past Troy. But, we don’t have that. So, only having 11 guys really hurt us. Anytime you can have all your wrestlers place in the top six that is pretty good.”
Corey Kemp (125) and Colin Nickolai (160) both won their weight class.
Kemp went 4-0, with all four wins by pin.
Nickolai is now 12-0 on the season with nine pins. On Saturday, he was 5-0 with two pins, a tech fall and a major decision.
Piqua will be at the GMVWA Holiday on Dec. 28 and 29 at Vandalia, with more than 40 teams competing.
Team scores: Troy 295.5, Piqua 278.5, Edgewood 262. Wilmington 258, Bellbrook 254.5, West Carrollton 244, Anderson 234.5, Middletown 189, Milton-Union 188.5, Mount Healthy 152.5, Cincinnati McNicholas 120, Oxford Talawanda 111, Tri-County North 61, Indian Hill 51.
