MANSFIELD — Wrestling shorthanded, Piqua still managed to finish sixth out of 23 teams at the J.C. Gorman tournament in Mansfield over the weekend.

“We were missing two guys (Corey Kemp, Marcus Deshner) that have consistently scored points for us,” Piqua coach Scott Kaye said. “But the guys that took their place stepped in an did a good job. Considering all that, I think sixth out of 23 teams is a respectable showing.”

The Indians were led by Colin Nickolai (160 pounds) who is now 22-1 on the season.

While Nickolai won the tournament title, it came in bizarre fashion.

With Nickolai trailing Michael Gallik of Lexington 1-0 in the championship match and frustrations running high, Gallik pile drove Nickolai into the mat and he lost consciousness for several seconds.
As a result, Nickolai won the match by disqualification.

Up to that point, Nickolai had dominated his weight class, winning all four matches by pins.

Zach Patrizio (145) went 4-2 and finished fourth in his weight class. Patrizio recorded two pins and now has a record of 13-7 on the season.

Trevor Nickolai (140) had an amazing tournament to finish sixth as he defaulted his fifth-place match due to a severe ear infection.

“He was in so much pain, we sent him home early,” Kaye said. “It was an incredibly gutsy effort for him to place in the tournament considering everything he was going through.”

Jordan Casey (119) also finished sixth.
